Interactive Installation 2026

Derang (A Conscious Pause)

Rooted in the philosophical principles of the traditional Persian garden (Bāgh), Derang translates the concept of an enclosed space for reflection into a responsive media environment. The project challenges the frantic pace of modern life by making human movement a direct disruption to the natural order, inviting participants to practice an intentional, conscious pause.

Action and Disruption

The installation monitors human presence and locomotion inside the space via two webcams. When a visitor enters and moves, the system immediately disrupts the visual environment with a heavy blur and shifts the peaceful ambient audio to a white noise.

Stillness and Emergence

As the participant reduces physical motion, visual clarity slowly emerges from within their tracked silhouette, revealing the geometric garden while natural sounds and birds and fish animations return.

System Architecture

The entire state engine, bridging the spatial sensory data with the dynamic audio-visual output, was programmed entirely within TouchDesigner.

Statement

Derang is inspired by the philosophy and timeless elements of the ancient Persian garden and named after a word for a conscious pause. It invites visitors to slow down, reconnect with their surroundings, and experience time with greater awareness. Derang creates a space for reflection, harmony, and rediscovering the beauty of the present moment.
